Rue’s Prom Dress from 1949 (No kidding, she NEVER threw anything out!)

After Rue passed, we found this flat blue bag in a storage shed in the yard of her Manhattan apartment. We popped the bag and hung the enclosed dress out to air in the yard. The thing kept growing until it was several feet across. Rue’s sister, Dr. McClanahan (what were they feeding those girls in Oklahoma?), identified the gown as Rue’s prom dress from 1949. She recalled the shopping trip to Oklahoma City to purchase the item, and even how much it cost – $200, which is the equivalent of $1,960 when adjusted for inflation. There are these little sparkly stones sewn all over the skirt and this dramatic trailing scarf; it looks like the exact dress “Blanche” would’ve worn to her prom. Rue’s waist was so tiny at the time that even unzipped we couldn’t get this dress over the mannequin’s shoulders or hips, we had to take it apart. As you can see, Rue wore the gown more than once because that is her wearing it years later at a college formal. This amazing find comes with 8″ x 10″ prints of the photos shown and a Certificate of Authenticity from Estate of Rue.
